STAGE 58: Ys

Ys is a series of action RPGs developed by Nihon Falcom that follows the adventures of the red haired swordman, Adol Christin which began on the PC-88 8-bit computer in 1987 and consists of eight main titles, multiple ports, spin-off titles and remakes.

For many who have played these games, The Ys series contains some of the finest and most incredible video game scores of all time. The series is also most famously known for streering away from the traditional turn-based battles found in most RPGs at the time for a “bump attack” system.

This game mechanic would fuse Action and Rpg genres together, never spending time waiting for a battle to start, and focusing on fast-paced action that Rewards quick reactions, intelligent planning, and pattern recognition.

A game series that contains just enough intriguing story and fan devotion that it quite literally separates it amongst the bevy of role playing games from various companies over the years. So this is why THIS STAGE of the retro vim revival hour is dedicated to one of the greats the Y’s series.
